    Why would people think modern humans would be any different than those that came before us? Is Easter Island not a good enough example?

    The difference is that there are many more humans now, and our population is therefore much more dense and interdependent today.

    Also, the Harvard video is neat. It looks great.

    I had a professor in grad school who was a self-proclaimed liberal. He had engaged in economic development work around the world. He told us that that native Americans used whatever resources were available to them in any way it advanced their living standards. An example from South America is the indigenous people in the Amazon. They burn plots of land because there is plenty of it and potash is the only fertilizer available to them.
