Study: Liposuction’s Benefits Are Only Temporary
In the study, the . . . fat came back after it was suctioned out. It took a year, but it all returned. But it did not reappear in the women’s thighs. Instead, Dr. Eckel said, “it was redistributed upstairs,” mostly in the upper abdomen, but also around the shoulders and triceps of the arms.
It turns out, Dr. Leibel said, that the body controls the number of its fat cells as carefully as it controls the amount of its fat. Fat cells die and new ones are born throughout life. Scientists have found that fat cells live for only about seven years and that every time a fat cell dies, another is formed to take its place.

This is very bad news.
I believe the study showed that people still wanted the procedure even after they were told about these results.
I had heard anecdotal accounts of this even before the study came out. Basically if you remove the primary place your body stores excess fat, future calories have to get stored somewhere else. Also, I suspect this is exacerbated by people who change their behavior (i.e. exercise less) once the fat is removed.
A disappointing result. I was giving serious consideration to a tummy tuck.
So, diet and exercise are still the most effective weight loss tools? Somehow I’m not shocked.
Yes a fat cell is formed after one dies and though the liposuction does not leave its effect lifetime. And it should be informed to patient before the procedure.
