  1. Alex says:

The amount of anger over the Olympic uniforms is just ludicrous.

  2. Vicki says:

$8,000? To get into a sorority? Ridiculous.

  3. Ken says:

I’ll bet Harry Reid has all kinds of foreign-produced items in his closet.

  4. Buster says:

For $8,000 college women can learn the ropes about sorority rush.

There’s an old Groucho Marx quote… “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member”.

To that I might add, I don’t want to be a member of any sorority where people pay a consultant $8,000 to convince the established sorority members that they should extend the offer of membership to you. Maybe this is just economic signaling, whereby you actually brag about spending $8,000 on sorority rush consultants in order to signal the established members that you are serious about their sorority.

  5. Devon Herrick says:

Greg Mankiw to reporters: go look at Harry Reid’s wardrobe.

I’m sure Harry Reid is smug with the knowledge that his bespoke suits are made in American by Americans (who work for the suit maker where he gets his custom-made clothing).

  6. Dianne says:

I just recently graduated from college, and not just in my classes but also walking down the hallways I would always hear young students talking and discussing politics, history, government issues, finances, and everything else that people might think students are not so interested in anymore. Believe it or not, there is still a minority of young adults out there interested in what’s going on around the world…it’s not all about what you wear or what you did last weekend.

It’s pretty pathetic how sorority communities feel so proud to announce to the world how their counselors focus on teaching their members about proper etiquette, how to act and what to say to keep an interesting conversation flowing…which of course includes not talking about “boring” subjects such as the economic reality the country is facing…which at the end of the day will end up affecting you and me, whether wealthy or not, if we are not prepared to properly deal with it.

I guess you are not cool enough if you talk about the reality we live in and encourage others to learn about it. I will never understand why anyone would ever pay, in this case $8,000, to join a sorority. Pretty ridiculous.

  7. david says:

@Devon, I don’t see how you or Mankiw can criticize him for that. After all, there is nothing in your espoused theories that opposes sending jobs overseas. But don’t you agree that the Olympics are about nationalism, for good or bad, and that his criticisms are valid in that sphere?

Also, is that a little bit of class warfare, bring up his “custom made clothing”? It’s interesting how righties adopt the arguments of lefties when those arguments might harm one’s opposed political parties, but then dismiss those same arguments when they might harm one’s supported political parties.

  8. Jormaine says:

    @ Buster: Excellent quote!

  9. Otis says:

    Sorority consultants?

  10. Sal says:

With what the program is costing state governments, I can’t see how Medicaid won’t become entirely federally run and federally funded by 2030.
