Should We Take Obese Children From Their Parents?

JAMA article says yes. See news story here. Megan McArdle says no.

I am willing to consider it.

It is very Nazi-ish thinking indeed! But then that is the “progessive slant”… destroy society, people, and countries all in the name of being “progressive” ….kill a/k/a “euthnize” in the name of decency… start with animals by all means (and always under the pretense of acting in the public good)… remove children from families (who cares about their actual safety or welfare, just make sure the state takes ownership! (In the name of humanity, of course)… “professing yourselves to be wise… you become ignorant fools”

  2. Devon Herrick says:

I find it problematic to think the government could take kids away from parents because the kids were too heavy.

  3. Linda Gorman says:

I was willing to consider it. For about a millisecond.

Why stop at obese children? After all, children who have improper attitudes are a danger to themselves and society, too. We’ve already seen cases in which school districts threaten to call child protective services and have children taken from parents who have doubts about dosing children with Ritalin.

Letting government take kids isn’t a slippery slope, its a sheer cliff into Soviet style government where family breakup is regarded as just another a tool to control population behavior.

Rather than remove the children, why not remove food stamps? Receipt of food stamps is a risk factor for obesity.

And anyone who thinks foster care is a good solution hasn’t been involved with it.

  4. Buster says:

I like Linda’s idea — remove the food stamps! I’ve heard Senator Coburn claim food stamps are a leading cause of obesity. I can believe it.

  5. Vicki says:

I don’t agree with Linda. We all agree (I think) that there is child abuse and if it is bad enough cildren need to be removed from the home. Surely there is some level of obesity that qualifies as meeting that level of abusiveness.

  6. KR says:

I don’t think feeding a child (if he or she is hungry) COULD EVER QUALIFY AS CHILD ABUSE!

  7. Deborah W. says:

Why stop at taking Obese children away from parents? How about children who bully or get into fights; what about those who disrupt class or talk back to teachers; or how about those who skip school for no reason? And those parents who are unable to make their kid complete all their homework regularly? For shame. How about children who somehow seriously injure themselves or get injured in an accident? What about those kids who lie, cheat, or even steal? Oh sorry, everyone’s kids would be taken, now, wouldn’t they? The children of every “Progressive socialist” society (Nazi Germany, Lennin/Stalin’s USSR, etc.), are eventually taken from their parents to be “raised by the All-Knowing, All Powerful Nanny State”. It’s all just another form of brainwashing and government control. When, as Americans, are we going to rise up against our fast-track towards totalitarian and socialistic “politically correct” b.s. manipulative government and say: “Enough is Enough!”? Our Founding Fathers continue to roll in their graves…

  8. Buster says:

Why stop at the children? How about removing obese parents away from their homes? Just think about it: They are killing themselves. They could be put them in foster fatfarms where their grocery intake is highly regulated. They could be compeled to go on 10-miles hikes.
