How Much Would You Pay for a Pair of Khaki Cotton Pants?

At Abercrombie & Fitch, they’re $70. They cost $44.50 at the Gap. But,

How about $480, for plain khakis from Michael Bastian? Or $495 for light cotton twill pants from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row? Or $595 if they are by Giorgio Armani? Or $780 for ones with elasticized cuffs from Bottega Veneta? Or is $350, as Thom Browne charges for chinos, the right price? The range suggests that since the luxury bubble burst, designers have no clue what customers are willing to pay.

    Reading the article sort of reminds me of the old adage… “a fool and his money are soon parted.”

    I will pay extra for a high-quality cotton dress shirt made in Italy or a pair of Italian wool slacks, which I expect to wear for several years. But $480 to $780 for a pair of plain khakis is a colossal waste of money.

    I’ll stick to my $20 old navy pants. But, I did happen on a neat little resale shop in Preston Center that has the $500 pants on sale for $30. You can’t beat that with a stick.
