How Employer Provided Post-Retirement Health Care Affects Retirement

We find that, forretirement-signn state and local government employees, retiree health coverage raises the probability of stopping work by 5.1  percentage points (around 28 percent) between ages 60 and 64. However, we find no evidence that retiree health coverage influences state and local employees’ decisions to stop work at ages 55-59, or that such coverage has an effect on the probability of stopping work for federal and military employees.

Once again, government gets in the way of legitimate work.

  2. Mark says:

Good! We need more old people retiring.

  3. Kevin says:

That’s already a significantly high percentage.

  4. Wilbur says:

    Thanks for the post John!

  5. Stewart T. says:

This shouldn’t be a surprise. People work to make their lives better, which is why our government should help give them security.

    • Billy says:

      Good premise, horrible conclusion.

      • Stewart T. says:

I’m never going to apologize for wanting to makes people’s lives better.

        • Billy says:

The government doesn’t make people’s lives better, only individual achievement does that.

        • Brendan says:

The government doesn’t make people’s lives better. It enslaves people who work hard through their taxes, allowing lazy schlubs to stop work early. Taxation is a form of slavery. Supporting higher taxes is merely increasing the level of slavery. WIll you apologize to me, who worked his but off to get an engineering degree, because I have to work longer for one of these types? I doubt it. But know this – what can’t go on, won’t. Your precious government will soon run out of other people’s money, and will then depreciate the rest of the wealth of this country, sending us spiraling into ruin. Our future will resemble the shambles in Russia and Eastern Europe after the collapse. Perhaps you will apologize after that, but I still doubt it…
