For Stem Cell Therapy, You May Have to Leave the Country
The Promise:
Doctors in the U.S. and abroad are now providing untested and unapproved stem cell therapies for ailments ranging from heart disease to emphysema to cerebral palsy. And they swear by them.
But the FDA is in court trying to stop doctors in the US:
Barbara Hanson, founder of the online discussion forum Stem Cell Pioneers, says stem cells have allowed her to rebound from life-threatening pulmonary disease and resume an essentially normal life.
“We’re not going to sit here and just die, and wait for the FDA to give its stamp of approval for us to have our stem cells used,” she says.
See article on FDA regulations on stem cell therapy.
I think this is true and I think it’s disgraceful.
I agree with Madeline. This is indefensible.
When I was touring private hospitals and clinics in Costa Rica I met a group of people who were exploring the idea of opening a stem cell therapy clinic. I believe the Costa Rican government has since passed regulations prohibiting stem cell therapy. I’ve was told the government’s primary worry was that Costa Rica is trying to become a regional hub for medicine and it did not want anything that might give it a reputation for allowing snake oil.
Thank goodness for a government that prevents terminally ill patients from risking their own lives with unapproved stem cell therapies.
i agree with above.I live in Los Angeles and HAD to take a long distance Thai Medical Vacation for my bothers treatment. The idea of compassionate care doesn’t register with the Insurance companies and medical boards here at home.
I can maybe see the embryonic issue but what about Adult stem cell therapy or cord blood or placenta?
Really sad state of affairs in our medical system.
Hi Janine…..Which hospital did you use for your brothers treatment?
Thanks
Ronnie
