Breaking: Obama Blinks

The Obama administration will allow insurance companies to renew policies that do not meet health law standards through the end of 2014, senior White House officials told reporters on a call this morning.

And whether or not this quells the current political battle over cancellation notices, it is near certain to create a big mess for insurance companies and the state officials who regulate them…

“This puts the insurance companies,” [Robert] Laszewski writes, “who have successfully complied with the law, in a hell of a mess.” (More)

“”It’s just a big mess right now. . . . I don’t know what to tell people,” Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger told my colleagues two days ago.””

Exactly what we wanted to hear..

  2. PJ says:

Has it just become the norm for him to change law via executive fiat? Are people just desensitized to it at this point?

Really important. A few more insurance companies will go belly-up.

    • Sabal says:

I’m not so sure this isn’t what he wants. As long as his policy can weather the political storm, single-payer is on its way.

    • Hank says:

By the end of this ordeal, the only option left will be for people to invest into HSAs. Only if people would have realized the benefits earlier..

  4. Mark says:

And how is this supposed to be implemented into the program that is still a mess, 6-weeks after it’s launch?

  5. George says:

I’m glad I’m not in the insurance industry, although consulting groups who specialize in health care could make a fortune right now.

  6. Dupree says:

Does anyone here really believe it will be possible for the insurance companies to get their cancelled plans back online for January 1st? That’s 6 weeks away. Wont these plans and their new rates still need to be approved by the state insurance departments? you think the state departments will move that fast?

More bluster by our president. He is saying we can have something that is impossible to deliver. This way he keep his position that it was the evil insurance companies that cancelled everyone’s plans, and he said we could keep them. What a farce.
