Anybody Can Be a Navigator

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi argued late Friday that new hires under ObamaCare could threaten the private information of people trying to get health insurance…

“Because of time constraints, HHS [is] cutting back on the requirement to become a navigator, meaning they’re not going to be doing background checks. They’re not going to be fingerprinting these people,” said Bondi in an interview with Fox…

“And it’s more than navigators. It’s people that assist the navigators. Now, these navigators will have our consumers throughout the country’s most personal and private information — tax return information, Social Security information. And our biggest fear, of course, is identity theft.”

A navigator is a federal employee who helps those wanting to get insured navigate the paperwork of the new healthcare system.

“What if they’ve been convicted of committing identity theft or grand theft before?” asked Bondi. “They could potentially still become a navigator.” (The Hill)

I don’t like the idea that HHS cares little for the quality of navigators who states hire. The job of navigator should not become a “make work” economic development initiative.

    • Tim says:

Hmmm, interesting points. Seems like more importance should be given to the quality of navigators hired by states.

  2. Tom says:

So now we’ve gotten into issues of hiring “navigators” for people to go through the process of applying for health insurance. Great.

    • Barry says:

Wouldn’t you think once people have to ask “navigators” to help with insurance…people would realize things have gotten a little bureaucratic?

  3. Perry says:

    Our tax dollars at work.

This is a frightening development. Identity theft is a serious issue, and this could harm a multitude of people.

    • Craig says:

I feel as though this could be a little alarmist. Do we really think the government would allow this type of thing to be so unregulated that it would allow people to get their identities stolen…

  5. Ashley says:

No background check is a bad idea

  6. PBK Ranger says:

Government always comes with $Billions in business non-value-added costs that real businesses shed right away. Hence the idea that govt can reduce health care costs is as much a lie as pigs are going fly. Costs will increase, many of those costs being laundered through the tax system.
