Therapeutic Hypothermia, Alzheimer’s and the Fountain of Youth

Therapeutic hypothermia: doctors cool you down about 7 degrees; then they warm you back up.

  1. Virginia says:

I remember reading about this study a while back.

For as much as I like the idea of “brain fitness,” I hate that there’s about to be a whole industry dedicated to creating mind puzzles for seniors. I’ve seen some of the “mind exercise games,” and they seem trivial, especially when the world has so many other problems.

  2. Tom H. says:

Virginia, what’s the worst that can happen? Playing mind games might actually cause people to learn something.

  3. Devon Herrick says:

A researcher at Ohio State University just came out with a dementia self-assessment test. That way you can find out if you’re a candidate for the mind exercise games!

  4. Virginia says:

To me, it’s a question of what they’re not doing while they’re playing mind games. Why not read a book or attend a lecture?

I too have played my share of Sudoku, but I would be much happier with my doctor if he said, “Go learn something,” as opposed to, “Play this video game.”

    I know I’m being a little snobby, but I can’t help myself.

  5. Bruce says:

You have to be very careful about what you wish for on living forever. A thousand years of Alzheimer’s doesn’t sound very attractive.

  6. Vicki says:

Virginia, try crossword puzzles. You will learn something new almost every day.
