How can the President say (with a straight face) that health reform will cost $900 billion over 10 years? Nobody — not even the vaunted CBO — can accurately predict how much will be spent on health care 10 years from now.
When Medicare was created in 1965, nobody accurately envisioned how much it would cost to reimburse for CAT scans, breast cancer tamoxifen treatments or vascular stents — because none of those things existed when Medicare was created.
With all the innovations happening in gene therapy, nanotechnology, and other medical technology, it is foolish to believe the President (or anyone) can accurately predict how much money will be spent on health care in the next ten years. This is just one of the many failings of planned economies.
