Medical Journal: Obama is Setting a Bad Example on Preventive Care

President Obama’s first medical checkup since he took office involved more than just a history, physical and blood tests. His Navy doctors also ordered CT scans, which are rapid-fire X-rays, of Obama’s coronary arteries and colon. The CT or “virtual” colonoscopy allowed doctors to look for colon cancer without putting the president to sleep, so he wouldn’t have to transfer power to his next in command…

But San Francisco cardiologist Rita Redberg, editor of the Archives of Internal Medicine, says she was “troubled” by the exam. That’s because coronary CT scans, which detect calcium deposits in arteries, and virtual colonoscopies aren’t recommended for men of Obama’s age and medical history, she says. Both boost a person’s lifetime risk of cancer.

  1. Larry C. says:

This is exactly how it works in Britain and in Canada. The political elite gets medical care that is denied to the rest of the population.

  2. Joe S. says:

Larry, it’s “unnecessary care” if it’s your care. It’s “necesary care” if it’s Obama’s care.

  3. Nancy says:

Comparative effectiveness apparently does not apply to the White House? What tests do you suppose Peter Orszag will have access to?

  4. Ken says:

I suppose this is one way to get a point across. Obama does something that is verboten, so that everyone else can visualize what it is that they are not supposed to do.

  5. Bruce says:

    Hypocrisy thy name is Obama.

  6. Virginia says:

This is another reason to force politicians to abide by the rules they set into law. If you’re going to make decisions about what’s “fair” for the average person, then you should have to do the same darn thing.

I agree with Joe. It’s only “necessary” when you’re Obama or any other high-ranking official.
