How Do Republican and Democratic Professors Grade?

The Democrats are more socialistic. This is from a study in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics:

“[T]he variance of grades is higher in courses taught by Republicans than in courses taught by Democrats. Moreover, in additional analysis, we find that relative to their Democratic colleagues, Republican professors tend to assign more very low and very high grades. The share of the lowest grades (F, D−, D, D+, and C−) out of the total is 6.2 percent in courses taught by Republican professors and only 4.0 percent in courses taught by Democratic professors. The share of the highest grade (A+) out of the total is 8.0 percent in courses taught by Republican professors and only 3.5 percent in courses taught by Democratic professors. Both differences are highly statistically significant.”

  1. Joe Barnett says:

I guess Democrats think everyone’s children are only slightly above average.

  2. Davie says:

This seems to reflect popular thinking. Democrats refuse to recognize failure at the bottom or earned success at the top.

This is a great analysis. Who would have thought political preferences would impact grades in non-political courses. I guess it takes a village to study for a college course rather than an individual student.

    There are Republican professors?

  5. Brian says:

I agree that this is a great analysis, but I think there is a little room to question how statistically significant it is. The truth is, there aren’t a lot of Republican professors in academia, so there might be some issues with the sample.
Also, it takes a certain type of Republican to be willing to teach college students. So, there are intangibles to consider.
