The use of so-called, chemical restrains are common among the elderly. There is more than one side to this issue. Nursing homes are often accused of using sedation because it costs too much to hire adequate staff. But, elderly dementia patients often become agitated and unruly. My mother became increasingly belligerent as she succumbed to dementia. The nursing home told us to consult a physician about the problem because it could not provide the type of care required if the problem was not resolved. The implied threat was: get a doctor to prescribe chemical restraints or find another nursing home.

“$200 unpaid ambulance bill causes $4,000 increase in mortgage costs.” – The real crime here is the lack of transparency of insurance companies. Insurance schemes baffle me that they don’t seem to have to respond to market pressure for greater customer access and understanding.

The ambulance story is a bit scary.

The last story illustrates just one facet of the dark side of nursing homes. There are others.

Hopefully, we’ll less of this trend of using antipsychotics on elderly people that don’t need them as medical science discovers better ways to treat Alzheimer’s.
