    Am I surprised at how wasteful Medicare is? I don’t think anyone is going to be surprised.

    I’s amazed that a program as big as Medicare still engages in Pay and Chase with respect to payments. The technology exists to verify claims in real time before payment is made. I just saw a presentation by Reed Elsevier that demonstrated how analytics can reduce fraud.

    The post about patient perspective is interesting. It goes to show you that the data matters more than perception. It reminds me of the Deming quote: In God we trust, all others must bring data.

    The mammography study estimated everything from survival rates to data quality. They didn’t actually know who did and did not get a mammogram. All they knew was when countries started “inviting” women to get mammograms.

    But this is health policy, so a study like this is headlined as showing that mammography has no effect on breast cancer mortality.
