Would You Fly to Mars if You Knew You Could Never Return?
Apparently some astronauts would. Choosing among them would create some interesting end-of-life-rationing problems, discussed by Tyler Cowen at his blog.

Interesting. If Zeke Emanuel were choosing, he would choose the oldest astronaut. But sure more is involved than just deciding who will die? Don’t we want the astronauts to do something once they are on Mars and might younger astronauts have more stamina and live longer to do whatever it is that we want done?
What about auctioning off the right to go?
It’s not just Mars. Some astronauts are willing to go on other space missions knowing in advance they will never return.
Here are some great Mars photos from NASA: http://bit.ly/mJIFp
The photos are great.
