Spiritual people have better mental health regardless of their religion.
Binge drinking college students are happier than their non-binge drinking peers.
I guess the happiest, most mentally-healthy people are binge-drinking religious fanatics! (although I’m not exactly sure which religion embraces that lifestyle)
Makes sense. Spiritual people are more aware of themselves and those around them. They know what is important in life and don’t let little things dampen their spirits.
As far as binge drinking? that may just be because students conform to the image of what they think college should be like and are therefore happy. i’m sure if there was less emphasis on the culture of binge drinking then those people would not be as happy
“It’s not that binge drinking is the solution to complex social problems,” Hsu said. “Rather, it is our hope that when universities and public health professionals design alcohol related programs for students, they take into account the full range and important social motivations underlying student binge drinking.” – Hsu
Giving universities a better understanding of the social situation is a great thing.

I have rarely, if ever, heard politicians talk about current issues from a spiritual stand point. In fact, I have come to the realization that most spiritual people I know, want nothing to do with politics or the government. Could this be the reason why politicians always seem overly stressed out and unhappy? Lack of mental health causes distress in many levels…which leads to depression and other negative symptoms. Spiritual people are usually happy, joyful, cheerful, blissful…not exactly what comes to mind when we think of people involved in government issues. Maybe they should try working on their spirituality…and see if this makes everyone happier and healthier!
They said that soy is bad once, they’ve flip-flopped on eggs a few times,…..I like the walnut advice, but it sounds like there is all kinds of further knowledge to be gained from food science.
The third article makes sense. People need social experiences. Drinking alcohol aids in the social experience.
I would even go as far to argue that moderate drinking by some people in authoritarian nations, such as many Muslim countries, makes those people happier than many of their puritanical countrymen.
No surprise about the first link.

The last story makes me curious: Do people who marry relatively earlier than their peers die sooner than those who marry later in life?
Good question Aurelius. It also begs the question of whether there is any statistical connection about the longevity of people who marry many times.
Probably the first instance I’ve ever seen “justifying” binge drinking.
Perhaps the constant inebriation makes students temporarily happier. Before they become dependent upon substances. Probably not something to tout.
