Quote of the Day
The cuts to the Medicaid program in the president’s proposal — which shifts the burden to states and ultimately onto the shoulders of seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families who depend on the program as their lifeline — would be harmful.
Ron Pollack,
Executive Director,
Families USA
Everyone understands the needs of people on Medicaid are great. However, the federal government cannot continue to encourage states to expand services with promises that the federal government will match funds. The federal government is spending nearly one-quarter more than it’s collecting in taxes. As a society, we need to decide how much we can afford to spend on entitlements, resist the urge to foist our consumption on future generations and live within our means.
Assuming we continue with President Obama’s anti-growth economic policies, Ron Pollack is right. But if government would get out of the way and let the economy grow, fewer people would need Medicaid.
Our fiscal difficulties will necessitate rethinking our entire system of caring for society’s lowest-income individuals. States will have to shoulder more of the burden. But, the benefits will be a return of state control of safety net programs.
Medicaid/SCHIP now covers a lot more than just the lowest-income individuals.
