A Way to Stop Aging?

Until recently, few people gave much thought to senescent cells. They are cells that linger in the body even after they have lost the ability to divide. But on Nov. 2, in what could be a landmark experiment in the study of aging, researchers at the Mayo Clinic reported that if you purge the body of its senescent cells, the tissues remain youthful and vigorous.

    I can’t help but be skeptical – it seems that every month, some company or industry has statistically significant evidence of life-elongating practices. In October, it was super doses of antioxidants. In November, it sounds like it will be “senescent cells.”

    I suppose that senescent cells could be thought of as the “death cells”.

    Furthermore, how might these death cells be purged? And if they can be purged, what side effects (if any) would there be?

    Chronic inflammation is linked not just to age-related diseases, but a whole host of other problems, including asthma and celiac disease. It would be great if scientists could figure out a way to prevent prolonged inflammation without doing damage to the body’s ability to heal.
