Uncle Sam Promoting Fatty Foods

Domino’s Pizza was hurting early last year. Domestic sales had fallen, and a survey of big pizza chain customers left the company tied for the worst tasting pies.

Then help arrived from an organization called Dairy Management. It teamed up with Domino’s to develop a new line of pizzas with 40 percent more cheese, and proceeded to devise and pay for a $12 million marketing campaign. Consumers devoured the cheesier pizza, and sales soared by double digits…

But as healthy as this pizza has been for Domino’s, one slice contains as much as two-thirds of a day’s maximum recommended amount of saturated fat… [So who is] Dairy Management? … It is a marketing creation of the United States Department of Agriculture.

No surprise here. When has government ever been consistent?

  2. Madeline says:

When you think about it, this is really outrageous.

No surprise here. Taxpayers are funding both sides of the war. Each side has a self interest in seeing the other side funded, so the war can contuinue and everyone can justified his continued employment at taxpayer expense.

I saw this article this weekend. I love cheese, but this makes me want to stop eating it. If Obama is really serious about obesity, he will pull the plug on all this funding. But, he is not. Same thing with subsidies for corn. Makes no sense when you think about the consequences.

Ads on television, encourage people to eat what is not good for them. Restaurants put too much on a person’s plate. They should put less and charge less. I don’t like government telling me what I can and cannot eat. This needs to be a personal choice. TV could put ads that encourage healthy eating instead of the opposite. If a person chooses to be overweight, then their insurance should be higher in order to pay for the medical problems caused by their obesity. Insurers could encourage their clients to loose by lowering their rates once they have reached a normal weight. Just like they do to smokers.

This is both funny and sad, depending on what kind of mood I am in.

This is one of the few instances when I’m in favor of big chees-hem, government.

No one can argue with a hot n fresh, cheese-bubbling, mouth-watering, extra-everthing-you-like pizza.
