Revenue Estimates from Tanning Tax are Half-Baked
ObamaCare imposes a 10% tax on tanning salons – which the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) estimates will raise $2.7 billion dollars over 10 years.
Industry officials do not believe a tanning tax can realistically raise $2.7 billion over the next decade. There are only about 25,000 businesses nationwide that would be subject to the tax — most of which are very small. According to John Overstreet, executive director of the Indoor Tanning Association, Americans would have to (collectively) tan at salons nearly four billion times over the next decade to meet JCT tax revenue estimates — something he does not believe is likely.
No problem. I’m sure the tanning tax estimates are about as accurate as all the other estimates.
This tax is not well thought out in other ways. It is very discriminatory: falling disproportionately on (vain) young women of Northern European ancestry.
What’s wrong with taxing 17 year old girls? Didn’t you hear Obama’s campaign promise: If you are over age 17 and you are a male, your taxes will not go up while I am president.
I think they are going to take it out of somebody’s hide.
Paul, not if they can find a place to hide.
Well, I can see that this is turning into a hot topic because it’s the younger voters who will get burned with the new tax.
A searing insight, Attila. But no one will be burned if Uncle Sam cannot find hide nor hair of them.
Don’t think about them as tanning salons, think about them as melanoma dispensers.
Sizzling insight, artk. Not worth a gold. But surely worth a bronze.
I can see this topic is heating up.
George Hamilton told me that tax really tans his hide and burns him up. It isn’t appealing and he’s not going to take it lying down, if he doesn’t take to his bed in the meantime.
And Don’s puns always seem to be a shade better than the rest.
