Fatty Foods and Marijuanalike Chemicals, Rural Life Expectancy, and Other News Items

After the rats ate fatty foods, their bodies immediately began to release natural marijuanalike chemicals in the gut that kept them craving more.

Rural areas have 25% of the people but only 15% of the doctors. Life expectancy is one year shorter.

A chilling discovery: after cardiac arrest the body is quickly cooled after the heartbeat restored, and survived to be discharged from the hospital—92% of them with most or all of their cognitive function intact.

I hope they didn’t spend very much money on this study. Conclusion: Low health literacy is associated with poorer health outcomes and poorer use of health care services. (HT: Morning Consult)

  1. Devon Herrick says:

Maybe the natural chemicals that rats release after a fatty meal are a natural selection mechanism. Those mammals who released the chemicals ate more and survived famines better.

That report in the WSJ about country vs. city is interesting–I’d like to see how cost of living factored in to the equation. Even though country dwellers may make 15 grand less, their cost of living is also much lower.

  3. Becky says:

Wow. Fatty foods are like a drug. I can sort of see why that might be true. Certainly a lot of people act like they are addicted.

  4. vtraweek says:

I’m not shocked about the rat study. Eating fatty foods, as Devon mentioned, is a natural selection mechanism that helped rats (and humans) survive.

About the cooling of heart attack victims: The article was gated, but overall, it looks like a really interesting finding.
