Blame Evolution for Diabetes

Humans evolved strong tastes for fats and sweets, tastes that conferred a reproductive advantage in the days when starvation was common. But these tastes can be a burden when we’re confronted with such supernormal stimuli as the 400-calorie Frappuccino at Starbucks. An evolutionary adaptation that once promised survival is more likely nowadays to produce Type 2 diabetes.

    The effect of fats and sweets is differs among ethnic groups — likely depending on the average food supply in their territories dating back thousands of years.

    Evolution or the modern food industry? It seems to me like there’s plenty of opportunities to eat veggies and fruits. It’s just that we lack the willpower to avoid the sweets (sayeth the woman who has baked 3 cakes this week for various social events).
