A Hamburger May Not Be So Bad After All

A new study from the Harvard School of Public Health suggests that the heart risk long associated with red meat comes mostly from processed varieties such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs and cold cuts—and not from steak, hamburgers and other non-processed cuts…the real bad actor may be salt. 1. Devon Herrick says:

Salt is a preservative in some processed meats (e.g. ham, bacon). However, I always add seasoned salt to my steaks before grilling — so I really don’t know what the difference would be between red meat and processed meats. Maybe the processed meats are cheaper (made of things we shouldn’t talk about while eating) and therefore we eat more of that kind of meat than fresh steaks.

Maybe the moral of this story is everything is OK in moderation.

It seems of limited value until they can show whether the culprit is sodium, nitrates, nitrites, rancidity, or one of the seasoning agents. Or even that it’s not just the fact that lower socio-economic classes tend to eat more hot dogs and bacon and less steak, and coincidentally have poorer health for other reasons.

All good news tody. I can have beer and cheesebergers and not feel a tinge of guilt.

I make my burgers out of lean bison anyways.

Wonderful news. I’ll feel less guilty now as I head out to have a double cheeseburger, double fries and a frosty.

  7. Virginia says:

It’s such a shame that something as yummy as bacon would cause so much damage. But I don’t think I’ll be giving up my BLT’s any time soon.
