What You Give Up When You Sign a Donor Card

But what are you giving up when you check the donor box on your license? Your organs, of course—but much more. You’re also giving up your right to informed consent. Doctors don’t have to tell you or your relatives what they will do to your body during an organ harvest operation because you’ll be dead, with no legal rights.

Most people are surprised to learn that many people who are declared brain dead are never actually tested for higher-brain activity.

But in at least two studies before the 1981 Uniform Determination of Death Act, some “brain-dead” patients were found to be emitting brain waves.

Evidence of life after death??? ……..that some form of conciousness could be left following termination of brain stem activity?

Speaking of a lack of higher brain function… Our current system is made up of entities that reap large amounts of money selling donated organs. Of those involved in the transaction, the party that doesn’t get anything out of the deal is the donor.

Rather than sign an organ donor card, I want to register with an organ auction service that uses competitive bidding to auction off my remained to the higher bidder.

Interesting. I doubt I could do much with those brain impulses anyway though in a state such as that.

    This is worrisome.

One might argue that if people don’t want certain organs being donated, they should be able to specify which ones.

There is alot of misinformation here. Organ sales is not legal in the US. One can register to donaate certain organs. One is not kept on life support upon brain death, the organs are kept oxygenated so they can be transplanted. Organ recipients apreciate the gift of life for the rest of their life and think of their donor daily. Please get the facts!
