Warning to Criminals: Your Germs May Give You Away

Four things to know about bacteria:

  1. We’re coated in it.
  2. It recovers within hours of hand washing.
  3. Every human’s coating is unique.
  4. It can be used two weeks later to identify the person who has touched something.

    What if I wear gloves when I commit the crime? In publishing this you may be tipping off the criminals.

    Article didn’t say you could identify someone. It said that on nine computer mice the bacterial colonies were “significantly more similar” to communities on owners’ hands than to a data base of 270 other hand bacterial communities.

    We don’t know how specific “significantly more similar is.”

    Article also says criminals need not be worried. Yet.
