Miss a Meal? No Problem. The Cells in Your Body Will Make Up for it by Eating Each Other.

This is from The New York Times:

Deep down, we are all cannibals. Our cells are perpetually devouring themselves, shredding their own complex molecules to pieces and recycling them for new parts…

This cannibalism may extend our lifespan. Increasing our body’s ability to self-destruct may, paradoxically, let us live longer.

Word of the day: autophagy (“eating oneself”).

So this is the theory behind the calorie restriction diet for longevity. Interestingly, I have heard it is healthier to eat one large meal each day and fast the rest of the day, than eat several smaller meals throughout the day. I guess the Larry North Diet isn’t the best way to extend your lifespan.
