Maternity Tourism

You come to America pregnant. And leave with a baby U.S. citizen:

For months, officials say, the house was home to “maternity tourists,” in this case, women from China who had paid tens of thousands of dollars to deliver their babies in the United States, making the infants automatic American citizens. Officials shut down the home, sending the 10 mothers who had been living there with their babies to nearby motels.

I think this is awful. It should be illegal. Would any other country in the world permit this?

  2. Vicki says:

I agree with Nancy totally. And then some.

At least they appreciate what it means to be an American citizen. Few American citizens would go to such greath lengths because we take it for granted.

  4. Devon Herrick says:

Changing the 14th Amendment of the Constitution is controversial. However, I don’t know why it couldn’t be narrowed to only apply to mothers presumed to be permanent residents. Granting citizenship to children born of tourists doesn’t make sense since they have no actual ties to the country.

    This is ridiculous.

Mexican citizens have been crossing the border for at least 20 years to birth an American citizen child so that other family members can follow on their coat tails. Now other ethnic groups are doing the same. This has had a huge impact on border states populations and has negatively impacted their schools, welfare rolls, emergency rooms and jails. This could stop if children born to illegal parents remained children born to illegal parents and would not be considered American citizens, just because of locality of birth. It is absurd to think that Congress and others want to take away benefits from American citizens who have paid taxes their whole lives and now need help in their old age(Medicare and Social Security), yet allow free benefits for non-taxpaying illegals who only physically birthed a child here. Changes need to be made to fix this! We do not have unlimited financial resources.

I paid for my children’s education, childcare and personal needs, without government assistance. I also paid into social security, which everyone wants to take away. By the way, a few years ago, I had personal experience with Chinese children having been sent by their families to live with others in the Irvine School District(CA). They had been recruited by agencies in China and the families paid the agencies for this arrangement. America needs to wake up!

I agree that it is arbitrary to decide one’s citizenship because of geographic location at the time of birth. There are plenty of other ways to determine citizenship beyond location at birth.

I personally think it is a little ironic. We think of China as being the next world superpower and yet they’re coming here for citizenship? I wonder if this practice will persist over the next 20 years.

as carol said this has been happening for decades with mexicans. i don’t know if i agree or disagree with it but the topic is certainly interesting

First the Asian mother is not looking to get something for “free” like some of the others mentioned. Most of these Chinese mothers already have American connections and could just come to US and live with a cousin and do the same thing.

They add cash to the US economy unlike others and when they go to the hospital to give birth they pay cash.

Most of these mothers want their kids to go to an International school in China and it takes an overseas birth to do that. That is the fact.

So everyone needs to understand the facts instead of thinking they are costing you. Rich Asians are bailing out US
