HSA Success Is Impressive

A new study by Ben Zycher at the Manhattan Institute shows how well Health Savings Accounts are working. These accounts are used by more than 6 million individuals. Among the findings:

  • HSAs are a great way to save for the future: Less than half the HSA balances in 2007 were actually spent.
  • HSA qualified policies are 10% to 40% less expensive than traditional policies.
  • The market share for HSAs is growing at a similar rate to IRAs balances when they were first introduced.

Glad to see this. The opponents are always putting out reports attacking these accounts.

The last bullet is the most interesting. HSAs are growing at a rate similar to IRAs when they were first introduced.

It’s hard to understand the liberal antipathy toward HSAs. They seem to love Cash and Counsel, which is the HSA idea under a different name for the Medicaid disabled.

Most ivdiniduals who have got health insurance get it via an employer. In summary, Obama?s program provides a less expensive government-run option, with nearly universal insurance of all Us residents. This public plan would function along with the private and other health care alternatives that now exist. The advantage of a public strategy is that it may well compel private insurers to compete for buyers when it comes to treatment, service and price tag.[]
