Could the high cost of care in Massachusetts have something to do with the fact that insurance in that state is the most regulated in the country? Just a thought.
Let’s see, Obama is concerned about health care costs. So what does he do? He proposes regulations that will make them even higher. What’s wrong with this picture?
As schools continue to fail to meet NCLB standards and as more states are given waivers, expect to see the chorus of voices grow that favor reducing the federal government’s role in public education.
In regards to that Texas Woman, I’m curious. I know BCBS will be different in each state, in Michigan, where I live, they accept everyone in their PPO plans. Their HMO plans are medically underwritten, but their PPO plans are not, of course, the PPO plans are more expensive, but not horribly so. I wonder if this is the same case in Texas or not. I have a severely overweight sister in law that once complained that BCBS wouldn’t accept her, but she applied to the HMO plan, and wasn’t willing to pay the approximately $100 more per month for the PPO plan (meanwhile she has an iphone, etc). People have odd priorities.
I can see the insurance company’s position though of course. I don’t think it is accurate that they assume everyone who has had the surgery is 700 pounds as is inferred in the article. But bariatric surgery has a very high long term complication rate does it not? She might legitimately bee seen as a ticking time bomb, not because of her weight, but because of the device in her stomach. Maybe she should have tried diet and exercise. A few months at a weightloss spa/camp (controlled environment) for the same price as the surgery.
Of course, if she were allowed to buy insurance over state lines, she could buy the PPO plan here in Michigan. Or she could move here. Not the warmest place to retire, but houses are cheap!
