30-Minute Delay to Teens’ School Start, Eggs are All the Same, and an Interesting Fact About Bonobos

Study: Later start to school boosts teens’ health. Health? Well, okay, at least they felt better.

An egg is an egg. White, brown, organic, nonorganic — makes no difference.

Try not to be admitted to a hospital on the weekend. Your chances of dying in ICU are 8% higher.

What people know about bonobos: they have a lot of sex. What’s more interesting: They don’t kill each other.

  1. Greg says:

I think the whole problem with human evolution is that we are more closely related to the chimpanzees than to the bonobos.

  2. Ken says:

Hard to believe the first result. Why can’t the kids just go to bed 30 minutes early? Then they wouldn’t have to sleep 30 minutes later in the morning.

  3. Vicki says:

An egg my be an egg nutritionally. But do they taste the same?

  4. Tom H. says:

John, hate to break this news to you. Any condition likely to land you in an ICU on a weekend is a condition that is probably hard to plan for some other day.

  5. Neil H. says:

I agree with Greg. We didn’t evolve from bonobos.

  6. Virginia says:

Weekend admits: I don’t think I’ve ever had a medical emergency inside of the normal work week. Most problems happen on the weekend.

Late school: My school swtiched to a later day when I was in 10th grade. It was EXCELLENT to get to sleep later. But, then again, I’m a night owl.

  7. Bart Ingles says:

I think chimps and bonobos diverged after the split with hominids, so in that sense we’re equally closely related to both.

This seems plausible to me. Look closely at bonobos’ head hair (think Dr. Zira) and their ability to walk upright. I happened to spot one walking across its enclosure at the San Diego Zoo, & my first thought was that there’s a naked hippy camping in the undergrowth.

The chimps’ propensity toward violence and harem accumulation is probably just a matter of a few hormones– the same as with humans. How much evolution does it take to alter the level of a couple of blood chemicals?

  8. Greg says:

Bart, maybe there is a chemical solution that will curb violent prone humans.

  9. Bart Ingles says:

Greg: there is, but it’s illegal.

BTW, my mistake; apparently the great apes are hominids.
